WRITER & DIRECTOR
Aaron Murray
Vazquez
Aaron Murray Vazquez is a prolific NYC based film director and photographer whose work mixes natural elements, intimate moments and surreal imagery. He’s earned 12 years of experience directing commercials, photoshoots, music videos, documentaries, and short films for large companies and indie groups alike. His work has been featured in the New York Times, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Rolling Stone, etc.
His feature length debut will feature these elements and also tell a passionate story that draws from experience as an up-and-coming photographer and the community that surrounds it. The story will also draw from his experiences leaving Texas as a teenager.
The film will feature vibrant colors and cinematic framing, resembling the films of Spike Lee and Paul Thomas Anderson. But will also feature quiet moments with humor that resembles the films of Sofia Coppola and Greta Gerwig.
WHY I WANT TO MAKE THIS FILM.
COMING OF AGE MOVIES
COMING OF AGE MOVIES
"Growing up, I watched many films featuring black and brown characters and their communities. I often found the way they were depicted as full of crime, dangerous and cramped. The conflict in those stories were heavily focused on violence and trauma, especially coming-of-age stories.
When I watched movies about white characters in the same period of their lives, their neighborhoods were not an looming threat; their troubles were more carefree. Popularity, road trips, parties, in-groups, etc.
With Nowhere To Go I wanted to create a film that feels carefree because our characters know the neighborhood and how to maneuver it. It’s full of vibrant faces that ricochet off of Kidé and Jaylen. Their struggle is surrounded by a love of their community, and the bittersweet moment of leaving your hometown, not of trauma or crime.
Nowhere To Go is an inspiring adventure that honors underserved communities, while advocating for a different understanding of these neighborhoods." - Aaron
